Speed Racer spins out in the final stretch. Photograhers used ultra-high-resolution digital still cameras to capture images in Italy, Morocco, Austria, Turkey and California's Death Valley to create the Speed Racer locations. Speed Racer (played by Emile Hirsche) squints his way through the Zunubian Desert. Oscar-winning tech genius John Gaeta ( The Matrix), visual effects co-supervisor Dan Glass ( The Matrix Reloaded) and V for Vendetta director James McTeigue orchestrated the action for Wachowski and Wachowski.

Sidestepping live-action "realism," the brothers pay homage to Speed Racer's cartoon pedigree by fusing human actors and CGI backgrounds into a candy-colored universe stitched together from exotic locales, retro-kitsch Americana, bee-hive-catapulting Viking cars and anime-inspired cities of the future.Įmile Hirsch, Christina Ricci and Matthew Fox are convincing enough as Speed, girlfriend Trixie and Racer X, but it's the film's four whirly-dizzy race sequences that stake out new turf in the visual effects arena. The movie, which hits theaters May 9, stakes a claim as the most technically accomplished silver-screen spectacle since, well, the Wachowskis' Matrix pictures. The game releases this September. The Wachowski brothers' final cut of Speed Racer popped, rumbled and roared on screen when it was unveiled Wednesday on the Warner Bros.

Look for further updates on the PS2 version of Speed Racer: The Videogame once we're able to get a copy to play side-by-side with the Wii version. Colors were vibrant, and the sense of speed was wicked fast.

It was difficult to tell at the show whether the game had gained or lost visual quality in the transition to PS2 (amongst all the PS3 and other games, this last-gen platform game was playing on a 42" plasma screen that we stared at from about two feet away), but for a PS2 game, it didn't disappoint. We already mentioned the three new tracks, but perhaps even better is the news that the PS2 version features a new character – proving that every game could be better with a monkey in it, the development team has added Chim-Chim as an unlockable character. The designers have added to the PS2 version a rearview (on the Triangle button) that comes in handy when planning out your Car-Fu attacks, and there's a heads-up display system showing when Car-Fu has been performed to give you a better idea of when damage is done. The combat "Car-Fu" tricks (where you hop up and try to smash down on your opponents) have been moved onto the second analog stick, and the dual-stick control is accurate and more than capable of handling this game's speed despite the loss (and in some cases to the advantage of the loss) of motion control. Control of the game transfers nicely from the tilt control of Wii to the analog sticks of PS2. Boosters on the track get you going faster, and there's a Turbo system with a four-tier reward system that, if you can save it up enough, allows you to kick into "The Zone" to blast through the course at incredible speeds enhanced with focus effects. These tracks twist and whip around like a kid's slot car stunt track set, but despite the insane speed and twisting layout, gameplay is kept simple – you turn when the track does or else you'll grind all your speed away. Timed along with the movie's DVD release (in September 2008), the PlayStation 2 version of Speed Racer includes three brand new tracks to race on, making for a total of 18 tracks across 6 environments. We had a chance to play the game at E3 2008 to see how it plays and what's new. The game is arriving late on PlayStation 2 after launching first on Wii (the development team decided to focus effort on one platform to make it good rather than rush both versions out to match the movie's release), but the port looks no worse for time and includes a few enhancements over the original release.

Movie-based games are never a sure thing, but in the case of Speed Racer: The Videogame, we've got a game that not only is pretty decent and fun, but that is probably better than the movie it's based on.
